Theosophy is concerned with the study of the underlying unity of life, the nature of reality, and humanity's place within the wider cosmos. It emphasises direct understanding, comparative study, and freedom of thought rather than belief or dogma.

The Three Objects

The work of the Theosophical Society is traditionally guided by three objects:

I

To form a nucleus of the universal brotherhood of humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or colour.

II

To encourage the comparative study of religion, philosophy, and science.

III

To investigate unexplained laws of nature and the latent powers in humanity.

These objects provide a framework for study and enquiry, without prescribing particular beliefs or conclusions.

The Lodge encourages study of original Theosophical sources. The following writers form the foundation of the modern Theosophical movement and provide the primary reference point for Lodge study.

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

Co-founder of the Theosophical Society and author of The Secret Doctrine, Isis Unveiled, and The Key to Theosophy. Her writings form the core of modern Theosophical literature.

William Quan Judge

Co-founder of the Theosophical Society and author of The Ocean of Theosophy, an accessible introduction to Theosophical ideas.

Henry Steel Olcott

Co-founder and first President of the Theosophical Society. His Old Diary Leaves provides valuable historical accounts of the early Society.

Approach to Study

Theosophical study is best approached with an open mind and a spirit of enquiry. The Lodge encourages thoughtful engagement with primary sources rather than reliance on secondary interpretations. Study groups provide an opportunity to explore these texts in a supportive environment.

The Lodge Library

Torbay Lodge maintains a library containing a substantial collection of Theosophical and esoteric literature. The collection includes works by H. P. Blavatsky, W. Q. Judge, and other writers associated with the Theosophical movement, as well as related philosophical and spiritual texts.

Media Resources

In addition to printed materials, the Lodge holds media resources including audio recordings and video materials related to Theosophical subjects.

Study Room

A study room is available to members, providing a quiet space for individual research and reflection.

Access: The library and study facilities are available to members of the Lodge. Visitors interested in Theosophy are welcome to enquire about access during their visits.
