About

Torbay Lodge and the Theosophical tradition

Torbay Lodge is a local branch of the Theosophical Society in England, and forms part of the International Theosophical Society (Adyar).

The Lodge exists to study and disseminate Theosophy, and to serve as an active centre of Theosophical life. Its work places particular emphasis on the body of writings and teachings associated with the modern Theosophical movement and the tradition often referred to as the Ancient Wisdom.

The work of the Lodge is centred on serious study and reflection, grounded in the Theosophical teachings associated with H. P. Blavatsky, W. Q. Judge, and others connected with the Theosophical Society. The Lodge does not impose belief or doctrine and recognises the importance of freedom of thought.

Torbay Lodge maintains a library of esoteric literature, along with media resources, and provides a study room for members. Meetings, talks, and study groups take place at the Lodge, and visitors with a genuine interest in Theosophy are welcome to attend.

Members are free to pursue individual areas of study outside the Lodge. The activities of the Lodge itself, however, are carried out within the framework of its stated aim and the distinctive character and structure of the Theosophical Society.

The Charter

Torbay Lodge was formally chartered on 31 January 1914, when its Charter was signed by Dr Annie Besant, then International President of the Theosophical Society.

Centenary

In 2014, the Lodge marked 100 years of Theosophy in Torbay, commemorating the signing of its Charter in 1914. This milestone recognised a century of continuous Theosophical activity in the Torbay area.

Part of a Wider Movement

Torbay Lodge is an official Lodge of the Theosophical Society in England and of the International Theosophical Society (Adyar). The Society has lodges in over 70 countries, with its international headquarters at Adyar, Chennai, India.

Our Home

Torbay Lodge occupies its own building near Torquay Harbour. The property was left as a legacy in 1925 to the English Theosophical Trust for the use of Torbay Lodge.

The Lodge regards this bequest as a responsibility both to care for the building and to use it in fulfilment of the aims and objects of the Society. The building was left with the intention of providing a permanent venue where like-minded individuals could come together for the serious study of Theosophy.

Facilities

The Lodge maintains a library containing a substantial collection of Theosophical and esoteric literature. Media resources and a study room are also available to members, supporting both individual and group study.
